AdDU holds online discussion: Pakighinabi on Philippine Internet Democracy

On Sept 11 the official student government of Ateneo de Davao (AdDU) Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral ng Pamantasan ng Ateneo de Davao (SAMAHAN), hosted an online discussion titled “Pakighinabi on Philippine Internet Democracy” at 2PM via Zoom.

This event’s objectives included educating community stakeholders on Internet Democracy, and engaging in discourse in hopes to develop interventions for such issues—goals of which are aligned with SAMAHAN’s advocacy program “Connect Mindanao: Internet Para sa Lahat” launched on August 31.

The Lead Discussants of this event comprised of BS Education-Social Studies Scholars Zacara Lastimado and Therese Litob (AdDU), Ateneo Lumad Students Organization (ALSO) President Ruby Bangunan (AdDU), Obrero Campus Student Council External Vice President Dafna Amistad (USeP), and SAMAHAN Central Board President Renz Lacorte (AdDU). The Discussants’ talk mainly touched on the issue of the unavailability of stable internet connection for online classes due to a varied number of reasons. University Student Council Senate President Christiana Lintag (WMSU). In between the program, AdDU University President Fr. Joel Tabora SJ presented his message in support of the advocacy of bringing the internet to all.

Senate Committee on Science and Technology and Key Reactor of this event Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, Yuki Almazan representing 2nd District of Davao Del Norte Representative Congressman Alan Dujali, Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Regional Director Alimbzar Asum, Angelo Nino Gutierrez representing Independent ICT Policy researcher Grace Mirandilla-Santos, Information Technology Department Chair Raul Lumapas (AdDU), El Consejo Atenista President Sophia Gallego (ADZU), and Commission on Higher Education “Higher Education in the Context of Bangsamoro Organic Law” (HECBOL) Director Nelia Alibin, Ph.D. were invited as Reactors of the dialogues presented in this online discussion.

Towards the end of the program Davao City Vice Mayor’s Office Representative Atty. Francis Mark Layog imparted his message and insights regarding the matter.

SAMAHAN Internal Vice President Kyle Gaite acted as Moderator for the duration of the event.

For the public’s viewing the conference was broadcasted in AdDU’s Facebook Live. #ConnectMindanao #InternetForAll were used as hashtags to promote the discussion.
